Once upon a time I am poor!!! Ha Ha that really should just be my life story I think. Anyhow I needed to get back to
Kalispell because I have a few loose ends to tie up before moving to Utah. Well Ladies and gents I took the Greyhound bus. Now many of you may be saying
that's really no big deal
Westover buck up.
Rewind to the summer of my
sophomore year of college. I had a bunch of friends that wanted to meet in Southern California and I was poor. So I took the Greyhound from Oakland to Fresno.
Hmmmm my Aunt dropped me off at the depot and her parting words to me were "Don't make eye contact with anyone and keep to yourself." I'm not going to lie that may have scared me quite a bit.
Well I got on the bus all excited to go and play with my friends not aware of the adventure I was about to have. About 30 minutes after my we began the journey a big man of a different ethnic group started to fight with his girlfriend. It started to get really loud and the bus driver told him to calm down and to quit screaming. Next thing we knew he was standing up punching the driver as we were driving on the freeway. Somehow the driver was able to radio for help and pull the bus over. As we all sat there not knowing what was going to happen, the irate man started to scream that he hated all of us
f@*!ing white people. In reality that was the bus driver and yes you
guessed it...me!!
The police came storming on the bus and arrested the guy and all was well. We again began our trek and I was once again excited to go. About an hour later the lady sitting next to me starts to cackle. I quickly realize that I am smelling urine and beer. She was drunk, had wet herself, and was enjoying her bus ride. I turned to look at her and she smiled at me, that is when I saw she only had 1 tooth. Well the rest of the trip was humorous and I did find it to be entertaining.
Fast forward to last Thursday. I got on the bus and quickly made the assessment that it was all good. I now can speak Spanish and really it was all good. Until we got off of the Greyhound bus and on to the 15 passenger van. We were squished together and it wasn't very comfortable. I started to have flashbacks of the scary trip I had many years ago.
We stopped for a potty break and many people got off to buy food. I had brought snack and so I peeled and orange and just relaxed. This is where my attitude started to change. As people got back on the bus they started to comment on how good my orange smelled. Being that I 2 more in my bag I decided to peel them and to share them with my new friends. It was a great ice breaker. People started to pass candy around and all sorts of food. We even talked the driver into letting us listen to the radio. Most likely I will never see these people again but the time we spent together was actually a lot of fun.
So my lesson that was learned was that as soon as I changed my
poopy attitude things didn't change but they felt a lot better. I don't ever want to take this particular bus ride again because it was an 18 hour ride. The good news is I lived and I got to know some great people!!!
